HEY NEXUS!!
So... the new year has OFFICIALLY began.
We had our ice cream social last week (thank you Sid, Nichole, and Liz)
It went nicely :]

SO.. NOW.. we're looking for fresh faces!
The member application is out, and we want members!!
If you know anyone that may be interested, here are some logistics:

The member application is due August 29th
And they must attend the member training in early September
They must be between 14-20
They must live in Butte County

..other than these 4 things, there are NO strings attached! Just turn in an application and we will look at it!

WOW! it's been quite a while..
and Youth Nexus has MANY updates...

We've successfully had a photo booth
at the Live Spot dance and we're having another one
on May 16th, so come and support us!

We had our 2nd semester funding round
and we funded EVERYONE who put in an application!!
YAY!

THE WALK HAS BEEN SET!!

WHEN: June 21, 2006 WHERE: Lower Bidwell Park (1 Mile) WHY: This walk is to raise money to help
stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, Africa. It's a crisis that
has been over
looked for many years and
we want to raise awareness and funds!!

Hey Nexians!

Things are starting to pick up. The end of the first semester is here and our first "STEPS FOR CHANGE" progress report is due shortly. We discussed this (and alot of other things) at the last meeting, BUT just in case you couldn't make it..
here's what we did..

YOUTH VENTURE-

We had a Bake Sale on Saturday.. we made $100! WOO!
We've been hanging out with the Sunshine Kids Club lately, we hope to collaborate a bit with them for STEPS FOR CHANGE
Progress Report due Dec. 28th!!
We're working on the logo (Sid, Oliver, Lili and Des)
Barnes and Noble book fair on Jan 13-14 2008!

GRANT STUFF-

PV and Chico High Schools presented to our group.. They both did awesome!

YOUTH NEXUS IS LOOKING FOR ARTISTS!!

What is Youth Nexus?
We are a youth philanthropy board that provides leadership opportunities for youth around Butte County to make a change in their community.

What are we looking for?
High school artists in Butte County willing to dedicate time and energy to help create a mural in Downtown Chico.

What should YOU expect?
Expect to have your artwork combined with other youth’s artwork on a mural downtown. You will also have the opportunity to work with a local Chico artist. You will be part of establishing a landmark You will also be representing your community and yourself.

What do YOU do?
Show us a piece of your artwork on a sheet of paper no bigger than 11”X15”.
Your piece is due by no later than Feb. 21st at 5 pm (mailing address at bottom)
Entries can be delivered by mail or in person.

What should YOUR art represent?
Show us how you as an individual interpret the title “PEACES OF CHICO”.
Youth Nexus chose this theme because youth represent our community. Youth also add culture, diversity and individuality.

Youth Nexus Meeting 1/11/06

FUNDRAISER- We chose a fundraiser. It is going to be a pizza night/ bake sale at Round Table pizza in Chico. We are also going to be running a photo booth at the next Live Spot dance on February 16.

GRANT WRITING- Grant writing is planning for the upcoming workshops (Feb. 1 and 3). A grant application was just recently sent in. The grant is for $15,000 to go towards the mural and mini-grants. We made a video!

COMMUNITY SERVICE- The date for the mural is Sunday April 28. There is a call for artists in progress. Since the location for the mural is right across the street from CN&R, we're looking into getting some kind of news coverage from them. We are also looking into getting coverage from a radio station, Channel 12 news, and also getting food donations for the artists.

CIVIC ACTION- A rough draft for the open mic night flyer was made. Oroville open mic night is next Friday (Jan. 26) at Mugshots from 7-9:30. We are still looking to get an interview on the local radio stations.

Fall 2006

Oroville High Friday Night Live- “The After Party” – Oroville High School is organizing an alternative activity for youth to do after a sporting event. The event will be held to prevent underage drinking and to give youth a fun and safe environment. This organization will be working with ASB and adult volunteers. The event will have various activities. Food and drinks will be provided.
Total Funding: $250.00

Las Plumas High School Friday Night Live- “The Bomb Prom After Party”- This organization is planning an after party for prom night to reduce the amount of underage drinking. The goal of the project is to show youth and adults alike that it is possible to have fun without drinking. The event will be held after prom and LPFNL is planning on working with the Livespot and parent volunteers.
Total Funding: $250.00

Hmong Student association of Chico- “Hmong in Higher Education” – This organization is holding held a higher education conference on December 2nd, 2006. The conference included several workshops covering the following topics: work after college and grad schools, women’s issues in education from Hmong perspective, communication between youth and parents, how to keep your child out of trouble, how the university system works, and communication with your child. The HMSA is also looking to promote awareness on the dangers of alcohol by handing out drinks with alcohol effects written in Hmong and English. HMSA is working with California Health Collaborative, The Hmong Women Circle, Career Planning and Placement Center, Upward Bound Alumni Association, and multicultural Affairs Council.
Total Funding: $370.73

Pleasant Valley Friday Night Live- “POM’P IT UP!”- Pleasant Valley will be hosting a booth at 3 home games. The booth that will be hosted at these games will focus on alcohol being supplied to minors from parents. The issue will be addressed by giving out pompom’s to parents. The pompom’s read, “Parents Who Host Lose The Most.” At the booth they will have informational packets and a pledge to be signed by parents that states that they will not host alcohol to minors.
Total Funding: $350.00

Biggs Club Live- “Operation Alcohol Prevention”- The youth will be making their way around to the community liquor stores in a decoy operation. They will also be educating the merchants on the consequences of hosting alcohol to minors. They will be awarding complying merchants with a plaque and a window sign for the front of their business. They youth will also be asking the storeowners to relocate the liquor to a less accessible place of the store and away from the juices and milk.
Total Funding: $265.00

Gridley High School Friday Night Live-“Taking Back Our Bulldog Pride”- The youth at Gridley High will be handing out promotional items at minimally two home games. The promotional items will read “Parents Who Host Lose The Most” The students will also have a booth at the home games which will have free information on the consequences of hosting alcohol to minors. They will also have a pledge for the parents to sign saying that they will not host alcohol to minors. They will also be putting an article in the Gridley Herald.
Total Funding: $250.00

Four Winds of Indian Education- “Native Chance Sober Dance”- They will be making Regalia and Drum Sticks to use in a performance to promote being alcohol free. They will be dispersing brochures explaining why it is important to be drug and alcohol free. During the dancing, they will also be educating the families that attend on the dangers of alcohol use among minors. They will also be showing a power point presentation.
Total Funding: $550.00

YOUTH NEXUS MEETING 12/7/06

The Grant Application- we revised the application and considered revisions
New Grants- There are grants that we (Youth Nexus) can apply for. One is for up to $15,000. If we get some money, we can fund mini-projects or maybe do projects of our own.
Mural- the mural is coming up and we need a theme. Can everyone come with an idea for the theme? The theme will be decided at the fiesta on Dec. 21. We are also looking for an artist to paint the mural.
Radio Interview- We can get an interview on the radio in Oroville with Lee Edwards. It will be somtime in January. The date will be announced at the fiesta.
Open Mic Night- Open Mic Night January 26, 2006 at Mugshots in Oroville. We will be planning more of that soon.
Fiesta- It's time for the end of the semester fiesta! It's December 21, 6:00-8:30 pm, at Desiree's house. It's a potluck and there's a gift exchange. Come with a gift that is suitable for both genders and a dish.
Fundraiser- We are going to do a photo booth at the next Live Spot dance which is in February. We might also sell food at a Chico high basketball game in the concession stand.

Hello All!!

Last meeting went very nicely!!

Discussion included:

the upcoming mural. We hope to have it up by May of 2007. It will be located on First Avenue next to Christian & Johnson's. More details coming soon!!
Open Mic Night: Hoping to take effect in Oroville and Chico by the end of January. A few locations that we've looked at in Oroville are Mugshots and Coffee's on. We would like to hold the one in Chico in a downtown coffee shop.
Radio Show: We are looking at being interviewed on a few radio stations in Chico & Oroville
Livespot Dance: We would like to have a photobooth at the Valentines Day Livespot dance.
REACH: The REACH for the Future Conference is coming up in March. We would like to attend as a council

Next meeting will be held @ Mugshots in Oroville on Thursday Dec. 7th

Chico Members will meet at the ASD conference room @ 4:15pm

Hello Youth Nexians!

The presentations went wonderfully!

Now that the grants are almost done, we will be focusing more on the sub committees.

Here's a quick overview of what's in the works for each one..

COMMUNITY SERVICE:

YOUTH NEXUS MEETING 10/26/06

The last meeting was at Uppercrust Bakery, downtown Chico. There was a pretty good turn out! Thank you to all who came. We basically broke into our sub-committees and began some planning.

Community Service is planning to work on several small projects and one large project. There will be updates on what the projects are at the next meeting.
Grant Writing planned for the upcoming workshops (Nov. 2 & 3)
Civic Action is going to try and work with the Sol classes at schools in Chico to prevent gang participation.

We are in the process of choosing a fundraiser for Youth Nexus. The fundraiser will be choosen at the next meeting. After all the buisness was taken care of, everyone walked down to the park and carved pumpkins!!!

The workshops are this week: November 2, 4-5:30 pm (Chico Conference Room)

November 3, 4-5:50 pm (Oroville Live Spot)

Members aren't required to go to both workshops, but the Oroville members should go to the Oroville workshop and the Chico members should go to the Chico workshop.

YOUTH NEXUS: Let the fun begin!

As new Nexus members, we will stay busy with serving our community, getting involved civically, and funding grants. In order to do this, we will be holding meetings every other week with additional dates for workshops, presentations, and activities.

The semester should be fun of fun and exciting events that YOU help plan!

Below is the schedule of events for the fall semester 2006.

What is Youth Nexus?
Youth Nexus is a council made up of youth from all over Butte County. The council helps to fund and complete community service projects, participates in fundraising, and is engaged in youth issues in the community.

Teach me to be a leader!
This year Youth Nexus will teach you to become a leader in 3 ways.

1. Grant Making: You will be involved in soliciting grant proposals, choosing grant recipients, and hosting workshops. You will get the chance to fund thousands of dollars to better the community.

2. Community Service: You will be involved in helping out the community through volunteering and participating in events—designed and chosen by you.

3. Civic Action: You will be involved in changing policies around issues affecting youth in Butte County. You will be a youth voice.

**All Youth Nexus members will have a chance to participate in Grant Making, Community Service, and Civic Action, but you will choose one area to specialize in.

What do I get out of this?
Youth Nexus Members will…
-Gain public speaking skills
-Participate in grant making
-Advocate for a youth voice in your community
-Partner with other community leaders to create/ change policy
-Change how young people are viewed in Butte County
-Have a lot of FUN!!!

Member Requirements
-Be between the ages 14-20
-Attend 2 Youth Nexus meetings and 1 community meeting a month
-Attend Fall and Spring member trainings
-Participate in community service projects and fundraisers
-Be interested in helping make change in our community!

How do I get in?
Members will be chosen based on an application and an interview done by a committee of youth and adults.
